10 Best Songs From The CW, Vol. I

Remember when “The O.C.” put out its first soundtrack on iTunes and it was if everything you’d ever wanted from life suddenly came true? Here was this show with a melodramatic plot that made you want to consume it like junk food and non-stop killer music that you weren’t hearing anywhere on the radio. In a lot of ways, it was the TV version of the “Garden State” soundtrack, bringing indie music to the mainstream. You’d seen performances on shows like “Buffy” and “Charmed” (remember when Michelle Branch and the Goo Goo Dolls performed?) but the music hadn’t been an integral part of the plot line before. Now we can hardly imagine a killer show without killer music, and few networks do that better than the CW.

Home to teen angst, guilty pleasures, vampires, witches, and beasties, oh my, CW goes above and beyond to make sure their shows are not just trendy, but setting trends. It’s easy to miss it when you’re watching it live, you love the music, but you probably haven’t heard it before. Go back a year later and catch it on Netflix and you’ll realize half the songs you’re hearing have become some of the biggest hits of the last year. That’s pretty damn impressive.

Recently I hit up the lone season of “The Secret Circle” on Netflix (don’t judge, there was some scary shit on that) and realized how fantastic the soundtrack was, did a little digging, and this playlist occurred, so without further ado, here are the best songs from The CW Volume I.

  1. “I Go Away”—MDNR

  2. “Young Blood”—The Naked and the Famous

  3. “A Heavy Abacus”—The Joy Formidable

  4. “DNA”—The Kills

  5. “Stare Into the Sun”—Graffiti6

  6. “Days”—The Drums

  7. “Go Outside”—Cults

  8. “I Change Every Minutes”—Bronwen Exeter

  9. “Cruel and Beautiful World”—Group Love

  10. “Sirens”—The Pack a.d.
