Why You Need A Little White Dress

Fall is quickly approaching, and that means our closets are going to change. (Well, in most of the nation Fall is quickly approaching… Here in Texas, not so much. But hey, a girl can dream.) With every change of season comes new additions to our wardrobes, if we’re lucky. This year, I’m indulging in buying a Little White Dress, or LWD. It’s the Little Black Dress of brunch. A fun, flirty, casual twist on the classic closet staple.

The color white has endless possibilities, endless shoe pairings and endless accessory options. It also transitions beautifully from day to night. Or as I like to think of it, from mimosas at brunch to martinis at dinner.

Here’s the same white dress gone from day to night with just a few accessory changes.

Such a dramatic change with such little effort. That’s something a LBD can’t offer you. Even if you dress a black outfit down, it seems heavy and out of place in a casual setting.

Stay away from heels and wedges. Cute flats will do just the trick. And of course, have fun with the accessories! Pick a bright, bold color to add some interest. Right now, I’m obsessed with these necklaces (left, right) from Kendra Scott.

If you’re trying to keep some money in the bank, Charming Charlie always has some nice, cheap options for accessories.

OK, now we know how to take a LWD from day to night with hardly any effort. But what about those of us who aren’t “dress people?” Some days the last thing I want to do is worry about a dress flying up at the most inopportune moment. So, not a dress fan? No problem. Whitewashing an outfit is a bold move that screams class while still in the comfort of jeans. Here, I’m taking notes from the one and only Kim K. The Kardashians have been pulling the all-white outfits off for years, and they’re killing it. If Kim can do it why can’t we?

White skinny jeans, white heels, a white T and white blazer. Simple. Perfect. To die for.

This is for all of you who live in a place that actually experiences the seasons as it should. When it’s a little nippy outside, try pairing your LWD with a chunky, knit cardigan. It will help add some earthy tones to your look, or brighten it up a bit if that’s what you’re going for. Another option is to add a scarf. Here’s a white jumper (another great option if you’re not a “dress person”) paired with a knit scarf and booties. Hello Fall!

And of course, adding a jean jacket is always a solid option. Taking another note from Kim K. That girl knows her fashion.

Now, wearing white does come with its challenges. You’ll have to make sure your undergarments are appropriate. Girls, please, wear nude or white. Please. It’s essential.

Also, try on lots of dress options before settling on one. There are lots of white ensembles on the racks that have thin material, and thin means see-thorough. It also means every bump and curve is magnified—sometimes, Spanx just can’t help. Thicker material is always your best bet, especially when it comes to white.

So there you have it! LWD is the new LBD. Go for it, Darlings.
