I’m extremely self-conscious about my teeth. In high school, a kid in my homeroom once told that I look like Shrek when I smile. Another year at Christmas my grandmother made a comment that I should look into veneers. You know, typical grandma stuff.
The thing is, my teeth aren’t bad at all. I never had to have braces or visit an orthodontist and they’re actually a pretty good set of chompers. But despite my good oral hygiene, I somehow have never been able to get super white teeth like my friends. I recognize that this probably has something to do with my lifelong coffee addiction, but as a result its left me self conscious, and hating the way I look when I smile. For my senior portraits, an overly cheery man in a hamburger hat yelled at me to show him my teeth, and I’ve been scarred ever since.
But, as Andy Williams famously reminds us, it’s the holiday season. And being self conscious over Christmas is pretty much the worst. There’s Christmas card photos to take and holiday parties to attend — and how do you feel confident talking to your significant other’s horrible boss at the company party when you’re scared you look like Shrek? Not to mention the fact that there is absolutely no better season to wear red lipstick than Christmastime. And white teeth look best with red lips.
