Off-Duty Dancer Style Inspired By Misty Copeland

I don’t know if you heard, but Misty Copeland—the first black principal dancer in the history of the American Ballet Theatre—is throwing the internet into a spin right now. And rightly so: This woman is, quite literally, on point.

The 32-year-old superstar dancer is the first female to earn the title in the prestigious dance company’s 75-year history. The need for diversity in the world of ballet is a subject Copeland has been vocal about for a long time, and it seems the message has finally been heard at the very top of the industry food chain.

Fans have known Copeland is a boss for years, though. Her memoir “Life in Motion: An Unlikely Ballerina” was published in 2014, she has been named one of Time’s 100 Most Influential People, and her inspiring Under Armour ad about ignoring critics reached over 8 million views. Poised to become a household name, after a viral whirlwind of praise, Misty Copeland has truly driven her message home, and inspired many new, diverse dancers to boot.

The problem is, for mere uncoordinated plebeians like myself, ballet is simply not an option. Which is a damn shame, because even though I lack the grace of Miss Misty, I really, really love ballet. Sadly, though, adopting the classic dance chic into my wardrobe is about the closest this klutz will get to Copeland’s level. Think athleisure, but amp up the femininity.

Misty’s style is minimal, but full of unexpected twists: a fun cut-out sweater, a deep neckline, a patterned sports bra under a basic tank. If you too are more of a “pass the popcorn” than a pas de deux kind of gal, channeling a little of the covetable “dancer off duty” look is entirely possible. So throw your hair into a bun, hold your head up high, and put together an outfit fit for a (dancing) queen.

Leotards are, without doubt, one of the most perfect ways to add comfort and class to your about-town ensembles: pair with some loose, high-waisted pants or a flowy skirt, and it’ll take the edge off the body-con-concern, too.

Smart Casual Minimalism

This cute little ensemble is the perfect example of Misty’s style: basic, but never bland. Throw a colorful crop top over a simple midi skirt, and pair with wedge sandals, sleek hair, and a smile. Beautiful!

Under Armour Everything

OK, this is hugely Misty-specific, but Under Armour has a huge range of beautiful basics melding the technology of sportswear with the silhouettes that’ll make you feel your most gorgeous.

Skater Dresses

This famous shot for the #TIME100 article is a classic; all eyes on Misty, rather than on fussy garments or extraneous detail. This dress is perfect for the job: clean, unfussy, and figure hugging.
