I don’t remember the exact moment I realized I was a Hufflepuff. I think it happened over the course of years. Mostly it came down to not feeling like I met the qualities of the other houses. I am sometimes brave, can be selfish, and have been known to prefer books to people, but none of these things made up who I was fundamentally. I didn’t even count Hufflepuff for a long time because I thought it wasn’t an option. No one wanted to be Hufflepuff right?
WRONG.
It took a while, but now it’s so clear to me that Hufflepuffs are the best. Since today is Hufflepuff appreciation day I’d like to take this opportunity to talk about all the way we are awesome. This is a pretty rare occasion since we don’t really like to brag.
Hufflepuffs are loyal
There is a phrase about people being loyal to a fault. This definitely applies to Hufflepuffs. We stick by our friends and family because they are the most important thing to us. We might not kill someone but we’ll definitely help you bury the body.
Hufflepuffs are good finders
Honestly, I lose so many things, and if you ask anyone in my family I am NOT the person to go looking for something lost. But I AM really good at finding good books and stories, great at finding new TV shows to be obsessed with and finding new music from my friends. So maybe finding isn’t as tangible as we thought.
Hufflepuffs are open minded and fair
I mean it’s right there in the Sorting Hat’s song about the Houses: said Hufflepuff, “I’ll teach the lot / And treat them just the same.” Helga Hufflepuff just wanted to give everyone education. She didn’t have rules about what kind of people were going to be allowed in.
Hufflepuffs believe in teamwork
But we aren’t very competitive. Mostly because we don’t think we need or really want the credit, so a lot of our house points go to others who obviously want them badly. We are the people in group projects who did all the work and still let you put your name on it.
Hufflepuffs are kind
It costs us nothing, but we generally find ourselves on the side of the underdog. I think it has something to do with being open minded and believing everyone deserves a chance. Cedric was kind to Harry when everyone thought he put his name in the Goblet for the glory.
Hufflepuffs believe in justice
This probably has something to do with being on the side of the underdog. It probably has something to do with people always making assumptions about Hufflepuffs that we want to prove them wrong. JK Rowling said that Hufflepuffs believe in justice but not at the price of giving up our friends or family, “friendship over fairness.”
Hufflepuffs avoid conflict, but we aren’t scared
We avoid conflict like it’s a bomb. We don’t want to rock the boat or upset the status quo, so when we tell you something is bothering us know that it was really hard for us to say. Even our sense of justice has limits. If meting out justice will cause problems Hufflepuffs would rather ignore the whole thing, even if justice isn’t met. See above comment about burying the body.
Hufflepuffs are animal lovers
A lot of Hufflepuffs work with magical creatures or in herbology. Since animals are notoriously good judges of characters I think that speaks for itself. Plus If you’re nice maybe you too can ride a hippogriff.
Hufflepuffs have had the least number of dark wizards of any house
It’s important to note that this isn’t because we are incapable of being corrupted. We are. I think this is a result of thinking no one is better than anyone else. This also enables Hufflepuffs to tend to have friends in all the other houses rather than just sticking to their group. They’ve seen the path the dark leads to and would just rather not.
Hufflepuffs also have has some pretty boss witches and wizards
Cedric Diggory – Cedric was the boss. Quidditch team captain, House Prefect, all around good looking guy, and chosen to represent all of Hogwarts in the Triwizard Tournament, but he didn’t walk around boasting about what an awesome guy he was. Cause he was humble.
Nymphadora Tonks – Tonks is the #boss. She marries a werewolf, gives birth and goes right back to fighting Voldemort? Can’t talk enough about her.
Teddy Lupin – Knowing Tonks and Lupin’s son was in Hufflepuff just confirms everything we know about them and him.
Helga Hufflepuff – Her chocolate frog card says she was “loyal and charming” and “particularly famous for her dexterity at food related charms.” Homegirl founded a house at THE premiere wizarding school AND was a baker/chef. Props to her.
Some great celebrities are Hufflepuffs too
- John Green
- Chris Evans
- Emma Stone
- Taylor Swift
- Jake Gyllenhaal
- Dylan O’Brien
- Josh Hutcherson
- Adele
Hufflepuffs have the best common room
It’s basically like a hobbit hole and it’s awesome. We’re right next to the kitchens so we are all about that midnight snacking. Actually a lot of comparisons can be drawn between hobbits and Hufflepuffs. We tend to avoid adventure, but it’s not unheard of for us to go on one. We aren’t scaredy cats, but we are risk averse, which isn’t a bad thing right? We’d rather curl up in front of the fire with some snacks and a book.
