On the other hand, if you’re still a novice at off-road trips and you want to know how to plan them with success, just keep on reading. Here are four useful tips on how to make it happen, so check them out and get down to it right away!

Choose your destination and come up with a detailed route

Choosing your destination is the first step you need to take before your journey starts. This can be a quite challenging task. This is particularly true if you’re a Fadventurer who spends all their free time seeking a new off-road trip. As such trips take place on rough terrain, away from the road, you must pick your next destination wisely and carefully. When navigating the terrain for the first time, you must come up with a detailed route.

So, open Google Maps and start your research! You can always create a route on the map by including every point you’re interested in – camp places, gas stations, and everything else you need to remember. Of course, don’t forget to export the map to your GPS or smartphone. This step will save you a lot of time and nerves – especially when you’re exploring an unknown route!

Make sure to pack everything you need – but don’t go overboard with it

Packing the essentials is the next step; however, you should be extremely careful not to go overboard with it. And what does that mean? Well, it means that you should be as rational as possible and avoid overpacking your bags just because you’re traveling in your own vehicle. Yes, we know that it can be very tempting – particularly when you compare it with packing your small bag that needs to fit a tiny overhead compartment on a plane.

But remember that you won’t need a lot of clothes and similar stuff on an off-road adventure anyway. Instead, bring a bug repellent and a small cooler. Sunscreen is a must, too, as well as your trusty camping gear – depending on the terrain. Of course, it all depends on the length of your trip, so bear that in mind and don’t overpack!

Ensure that your vehicle is road-ready and completely safe

Apart from bringing all the essentials and necessary equipment, you must also ensure that your vehicle is completely safe and road-ready. This gets even more important when you’re planning an off-road adventure, as these are much more challenging than regular road trips due to rough terrain. First of all, be sure to get top-quality offroad tyres that have a proper grip on both wet and dry terrain. Besides that, these are puncture-resistant, too, which is essential for this kind of trip.

Such tyres will successfully carry your vehicle over sand, rocks, dirt, mud, snow, and similar uneven surfaces. Apart from the tyres, you should have your vehicle serviced as well. Do the safety checks on battery, brakes, and fluid levels. An oil change should be included, too. Once you’re done with all that, your vehicle is ready to go!

Anticipate your fuel needs

Anticipating your fuel needs is crucial when you’re planning a longer trip, so make sure not to skip it. To make this happen, you must understand your MPG and fuel economy when off-roading. Did you know that these are usually lower than what you get when driving on the road? That’s right, and you should also remember that your average off-road MPG is around half of your normal, on-road MPG.

Of course, you shouldn’t rely on it blindly as everything depends on other factors you’ll get to experience first-hand. To anticipate your fuel needs more precisely, you can use a map and calculate your total mileage according to it. This is how you’ll know when to fill up before hitting an area without any gas stations around. This step can be extremely useful – especially when you don’t want to spend too much money refueling your vehicle too often!

As you can tell, planning an off-road adventure can definitely be a piece of cake – but only if you know exactly what you’re doing. So, if you can’t wait to embark on a new adventure, just stick to our tips and plan it out to the tiniest detail. Once that’s done, you can feel free to start your journey and enjoy your off-road trip like a true pro. That’s a promise!
